Pattern notes

PDF version, should you wish to purchase one is available from the Etsy site.

Please note that the measurements are approximate. The actual length and width will depend on your tension which might be different than mine and the type of yarn used.

Note 1: If you want to crochet a different number of repeats, remember that each wave requires 17 stitches, plus 3 additional stitches at the end. For example, if you want 5 repeats, multiply 17 by 5 (which gives 85 stitches), then add 3 more stitches, bringing you to a total of 88.

If you plan to add a wide border, simply increase the number of stitches evenly on both sides to your liking. For example, the blanket shown here uses 4 repeats of the main pattern, plus a 20-stitch wide border (10 stitches on each side). This gives the following stitch count:

10 border + (17 x 4) + 3 for the main body + 10 border = 91 starting stitches.

Note 2: When working a row of double crochet, the first chain does not count as a stitch. Start the row by chaining 1 or 2, depending on what works best for your project and doesn’t pull at the edge. (I used ch1, but with thinner yarn, you may need ch2.) After the chain, work your first double crochet into the very first stitch. This method helps to avoid gaps at the beginning of each row.

Note 3: On the following pages, you’ll find an explanation of how to crochet the sampler wave stitch if you'd like to test the size. There’s also a note on working in the back loops or front loops only, supported by images.

Body of the blanket

Row 8: Ch1, 1dc in the first stitch, then 9dc in the back loop only - 10dc in total (this is the right-hand side border). Now work 2dc in the next 3 stitches; skip one stitch and work *1dc in the next, skip one*. Work 5 times from * to *.

{Then work 2dc in each of the next 6 stitches (12 in total); skip one stitch and work *1dc in the next, skip one*. Work 5 times from * to *}. Repeat all in the curly brackets from {to} until you have 13 stitches let on the row.

Finish the row by 2dc in the next 3 stitches, then 1dc in the next 9 stitches but at the back loop only finishing the last dc through both loops. Ch1 and turn.

Row 9: Sc in the first stitch; sc in the next 9 stitches but front loop only (that’s 10 stitches in total). Continue working sc through both loops now until you have only 10 stitches left. Then work again sc in the next 9 front loops and the 10th is worked through both loops.

Repeat Rows 8 and 9 until you reach row number 32. Then we work the wide border again.

Row 36 (WS): Work 1dc in the first stitch, then work 1dc in the front loop until you have just one stitch left. Work the last dc through both loops (88dc in total). Ch1 and turn

Row 37 (RS): Work 1dc in the first stitch, then work 1dc in the back loop until you have just one stitch left. Work the last dc through both loops (88dc in total). Ch1 and turn.

Row 38 (WS): Work sc through both loops, then sc in the front loop until you have only 1 stitch left. Work that list sc stitch through both loops.

Border around the blanket:

*Ch3, 2dc in the same stitch, skip 2dc stitches and slst in the third*. Repeat from * to * all the way around the blanket joining the ends by slst. Wave in the ends.
