Basic crochet gloves in UK and US crochet terms






Last week I crochet fingerless mittens with hearts for my 4 years old daughter but she really wanted proper gloves and I made these. They are very easy and suitable for beginners.

I used 100% wool yarn and 4mm hook. I would suggest to measure the wrist and crochet the size needed and to do the same with the length of the glove.

The pattern for my 4 years old daughter written in UK (US) crochet terms




 Cuffs are worked in rows:
Ch 21
Row 1: dc (sc) in in the second chain from the hook then work dc (sc) in the rest of the stitches. Turn.
Row 2 to Row 12: Ch1, dc (sc) in the back loop.

The cuff I crochet in the desired length looked like this before I folded it (this picture is from my heart mittens but the technique is the same):


Next I folded and attached together the short sides first. Once that done, I folded along the long side and ended up it nice, soft, fluffy cuffs like the one on the picture below. Then I crochet dc (sc) all around (24 stitches in total as I have 12 ribbed stripes)



Glove part pattern is worked in the round:

 Round 1 and 2: Ch1, dc (sc) in the same st; HTC (HDC) 23 times. Finish the round by slst on the top of the first dc (sc).

Round 3 (Left hand): Ch1, dc (sc) in the first 3 sts; *2HTC (HDC) in the next st*; repeat from * to * two more times (3 in total); then continue the round by HTC (HDC). Finish by slst on the top of the first dc (sc).

Round 3 (Right hand): Ch1, dc (sc) in the next 20 sts; *2HTC (2HDC) in the next st*; repeat from * to * two more times (3 in total); then continue the round by HTC (HDC) in the last 3 sts. Finish by slst on the top of the first dc (sc).

Note: For the opening of the thumb you may need to adjust how many stitches to do with  2HTC (2HDC). If the work is done with smaller hook, probably 4 might work better.

Note 2: At the beginning of the round I sometimes use dc (sc) then I work HTC (HDC) in the stitch behind the first one, then I continue forward. This way the seam is not so prominent but then you will need to adjust the stitch count.

Round 4: Ch1, dc (sc) in the same st; HTC (HDC) in all of the other stitches but when you reach the thumb opening, work ch 4, skip next 5 st (these are formed by the 2HTC (2HDC) of the previous round) and work HTC (HDC) in the 6th st, then cont HTC (HDC). To finish the round slst on the top of the first st.

Round 5: Ch1, dc (sc) in the same st; HTC (HDC) in all of the other sts. When you reach the thumb opening work 4 HTC (4HDC) around the chain of 4.

Round 6 to 9: Ch1, dc(sc) in the same st; HTC (HDC) in the rest of the sts. Finish by slst on top of the first dc (sc).

Round 10: Work the same way as round 9 but decrease by 2 sts on each side. For example if the work is 24 sts, crochet HTC (HDC) in the first 4 sts, then work st 5 and st 6 together HTC2Tog (HDC2tog). Continue as normal until you reach the other side of the hand, this would be after around 11 sts. Then work HTC2Tog (HDC2Tog).

Round 11 until you reach the desired length: Work the same way as round 10 and crochet HTC2Tog (HDC2Tog) when you reach the decrease from previous round.

Finishing: Turn the glove inside out and sew both sides together at the end of the fingers.

****** Thumb Crochet ******

Round 1: Work from the right side. Insert the yarn at the base of the thumb. Work few HTC (HDC) the on the top part work 3 or 4 Treble (Double) Crochet, finishing by HTC (HDC). Join the round opening by slst.

Round 2 - 6: Ch1, dc (sc) in the same st, HTC (HDC) in the rest of the sts.

Fasten off, sew the ends of the thumb from the inside and wave in the ends.

Apple leaves Baby Blanket - Lacy Knitting Pattern
