Crochet Hat for Babies - cable crochet




I wanted to crochet cabled hat for some time now and finally I have it ready. The pattern is for approximately 0-6 months old babies. The brim is very stretchy, which is good and the hat fits for longer.


The hat is worked from the brim up to the top. The brim is worked in rows then joined together and folded. The hat is worked onto the brim and in the round. Beginning chains do not count as the 1st stitch for each round (and row) throughout the pattern. For example, at the end of a round, sl st join to the 1st stitch of the round not the beginning chain

Difficulty level: Intermediate

Size: 0-6
 

Circumference measurements notes: The measurements for the circumference are taken at the brim. The brim is stretchy and it is with few inches (cm) smaller than the head circumference for a nice and snug fit.

Height measurements notes: The height is measured from the brim to the top after the brim is folded.

Tension: The exact tension is not essential but it is very important to measure your work at every stage.

Materials

Yarn: I crochet the mittens and the hat with fine baby merino from Drops Design but you could use any soft yarn of your preference.

Crochet Hook Size: 3.5mm

Abbreviation used
yo = yarn over
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
FPdc = front post double crochet
BPdc = back post double crochet



Brim
The brim of the pictured hat I crochet using half-double crochet in the back post. However, this was not stretchy enough and I changed to sc in the back post technique. I will soon post the picture of the new hat I made.
Start by ch of 21.

Row 1: Starting in the second chain from the hook work sc in each ch 21. Turn.
Row 2: ch1, sc20 in the back loops only until the end of the row. Ch1 and turn
Repeat row 2 until the length of the brim is 90 rows. (Depending on the size to crochet, the rows should be multiples of 15 - this is how many we need for one block of the pattern)

Hat
The body of the hat is worked in rounds which consist of ribbed block followed by cable.
Row 1: ch2, hdc 90. Sl at the top of the first hdc.
Row 2: ch2, *FPdc, BPdc*. Repeat 7 times more (8 ttimes in total). The next 4 stitches will start forming the cable.

Cable [Skip 2 st, FPdc 2, FPdc 2 in the skipped stitches], BPdc. 

Now continue working ** [FPdc, BPdc] 4 times in total; Cable [Skip 2 st, FPdc 2, FPdc 2 in the skipped stitches], BPdc**. Repeat from ** to ** to finish the round.

Row 3: ch2, *FPdc, BPdc*. Repeat 7 times more (8 ttimes in total). Work FPdc in the next 4 st (these are the 4 stitches from Row 2 forming the cable).

Now continue working ** [FPdc, BPdc] 4 times in total; Cable [Skip 2 st, FPdc 2, FPdc 2 in the skipped stitches], BPdc**. Repeat from ** to ** to finish the round.

Row 4: Repeat row 3

Row 5: Repeat row 2 to Row 4 until you reach the desired hight of thehat.
